Ironically, my father asked me the other day what his best option is for a netbook computer. To be honest, at the time, I really didn’t have a good answer for him. Netbooks are inherently cheap but their specs have reflected their price, and their size made touch typing a chore. It seems like the answer has appeared out of thin air. The ASUS S101 was just released and is the first to seemingly bridge the gap between netbook and notebook. The newest edition to the Eee PC family is already being called the MacBook Air killer, and for good reason. Priced nicely at $699-$799, it has a 10.2 inch widescreen, 3 usb ports, 1 gig of ram, an Intel Atom processor, is slightly thicker than the Air at 21mm at its thickest and weighs less than Air at just 2.2 pounds. It is available with either XP or Linux installed coupled with a 16 GB SSD for the XP model and 32/64 GB SSD available in the Linux rig. If your confused, like us, why the larger storage is only available with Linux OS, ASUS provides a 16 GB card to be used in the S101 4 in 1 card reader and 30 GB of free storage online, to ease some of your confusion. It is offered in 3 colors (champagne (eh), brown (could be cool) and graphite (sweet)) and is sporting 1028 x 768 resolution. We almost forgot the best part! It has a multi-touch trackpad and word is touch typing is much improved over the previous Eee PC models due to its larger form. A 0.3 megapixel webcam seems to top the list of complaints from testers but is really the only downfall expected. The S101 isn’t on the ASUS website yet but word is it will be available for purchase early November. [via GearCrave]
